Play Something
Chart-Topping
Brooks & Dunn Hit #1 with Hillbilly Deluxe's Lead
Single "Play Something
Country"
Nashville: It's not like they've never done it before. But there's just
something about the top of the charts that really makes Ronnie Dunn and
Kix Brooks smile! And so it is that the hard-charging duo find
themselves
grinning from ear-to-ear as "Play Something Country," the lead single
from their just released Hillbilly Deluxe, hits #1 on both the Billboard
and Radio & Records Country Singles chart
"Yeah, you never take that feeling for granted," says power-vocalist
Dunn, who co-wrote the song The New York Times tagged "a revved up
backlash anthem for anyone sick of the genre's inclusive mood" with
compadre and frequent co-writer Terry McBride. "You put it out there,
and you want people to kick it up another notch, to respond, to get
caught up in it." "And you know," continues low-flying stagemaven Kix
Brooks, "it is pretty much a rallying cry for everything we do. I mean,
we may turn those guitars up -- and play hard and loud -- but in the
end, we're all about taking country music and setting it on stun. That's
what we do, and that's what this song is about."
It's also about the 4-time Entertainer of the Year's 25th chart-topping
single. Having debuted with a #1 hit with "Brand New Man," the
record-breaking duo who's sold more records than any other pair except
Simon & Garfunkel have been one of country music's most consistent hit
acts -- including three consecutive #1s from Steers & Stripes ("There
Ain't Nothing 'Bout You," "Only In America" and "The Long
Good-Bye").
"You don't ever think of it in those terms," says Brooks. "You're just
looking for songs that hit you in the gut or the heart or the soul or
the soles, and you believe other people are gonna feel what you're
feeling. That's always kinda been the way Ron and I have done it. and
when you hear something like 25 #1s, it makes you feel like you're in
touch with the people who dig your music."
"Yeah, when you release that first single, you're just hoping it works,"
Dunn continues. "You don't ever dare think about where you'll be down
the road. dreaming about ONE #1 single seems like pretty big stuff. So
to be here, doing what we do, well, that's about the best feeling there
is. How's the song go: 'whooo-OOOOOO-oooh!'? Oh, yeah."
With Hillbilly Deluxe out -- and fans finally able to get their hands on
the inspiring "I Believe," the hardcore defining title track, the rowdy
girl-power anthem "Get Outta Town" and the Sheryl Crow/Vince Gill
performance on Larry Willoughby's vintage "Building Bridges" -- and
"Play Something Country" at the top of the singles chart, B&D's Deuces'
Wild Tour kicks into overdrive, hitting Kansas City, Chicago and St.
Louis this weekend.
